FAQ Drop Day *

When and where do Drops take place?
All volunteers meet at 11am PST near the USC area each Sunday. The address will be sent to you via email when you sign up for a Drop. You should expect to be volunteering with us for the entire duration of a Drop from 11am to 2pm PST.

How should I prepare for a Drop?
We advise all volunteers to download the GroupMe app, charge their phones the night before, get a good night’s rest, stretch and use the restroom the morning of, and eat and hydrate beforehand. If driving, we also advise volunteers to fill up on gas the day before and clear the trunks of their car and passenger seats.

What does a Drop look like?
Beginning at 11am PST, all volunteers check-in with the WDLA Team at the starting lot. At check-in, volunteers will learn what route they have been assigned to and who their partner(s) for the day will be. New volunteers will always be paired with other, experienced volunteers. From there, volunteers will load up their cars with water and other supplies. We also provide brief trainings regarding what else to expect for the rest of the Drop. Volunteers will then drive to Skid Row, distribute water and other supplies to community members, and help with other tasks needed to complete a successful Drop day. For more information, you can visit our Drops page here.

Do I need to have a car to volunteer?
Nope! You can always sign up to be a passenger in someone else’s car for a Drop. We have other roles that don’t involve being a driver or passenger as well.

What should I wear to the Drop?
We advise our volunteers to wear clothing that would comfortably fit you for a day of lifting, walking, and other potential aerobic movements. This includes, but is not limited to, closed toe shoes, a breathable long or short sleeved shirt, loose fitting pants, a hat, and a poncho if it is raining. Please bring a high quality mask, such as a KN95, N95, or any other mask that provide similar or better protection. Due to the fast paced nature of the Drops, we also advise volunteers from wearing jewelry or other valuables you would not want to lose, break, or damage.

Should I bring anything else to the Drop?
We recommend volunteers to bring a box cutter, plastic bags you would like to recycle and give out, hand sanitizer, your own water, sun screen (even on overcast or rainy days), your phone, and a can-do attitude.

That time on Sunday doesn’t work for me. Can I volunteer at a different time?
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate scheduling conflicts. There are a lot of moving parts that go into making a successful Drop, so it’s important that all volunteers participate for the entire duration of a Drop. This creates an environment in which we can best support one another as efficiently as possible.
